Debt Management
Debt management programs are designed for those who have let their debt get so much out of control that it is threatening to pull the family into bankruptcy or worse.
Debt management is a skill that some people learn very young and that some people never learn at all. Debt is very important in our society. Probably more important than in any society before us. And yet, relatively few think about how learning to deal with it can either positively or negatively affect their family.
A primary reason for families getting into debt is living beyond their means. For example, maybe based on their salary, they can only comfortably afford a used car. But, to keep up appearances and to impress their neighbors, they purchase a new car instead. Another example is buying or renting a home that is clearly outside of the affordability range based on their monthly income. In both cases, somehow they think that the money will magically appear at the end of the month when the bills are due.
A family with a good understanding of debt management will rarely find herself in a situation where it is so overwhelmed by debt that foreclosure is a distinct possibility. They will know how to set up and follow a budget. They will also avoid getting themselves deep into debt in the first place by avoiding the purchase of things that they don't need.
In the U.S., the debt business is a billion dollar industry. Debt management programs are everywhere promising to help you get out of debt by next week. But it's not that easy. If it were, you wouldn't need to join a debt management program or talk to a debt management consultant.
When considering joining a debt management program, it's important to think of the program as a tool, not as a savior. And as such, you should know that there are bad tools and good tools. Unfortunately, there aren't real checks and balances on the practices of debt management companies. And when you hear in the newspapers of such an agency being indicted or charged with wrongdoing, it is usually a fact. As a result, you really have to do your research before joining such a service.
That is not to say that you should simply avoid debt management services. A good debt management service, can, however not only help you to get out of debt, but they can teach you how to avoid getting into the same situation in the future.
Debt Settlement Attorney A debt settlement attorney is an attorney who can negotiate, on your behalf, with one or more creditors, to lessen the balance of what you owe that creditor.
Debt Management Consultant The job of a debt management consultant is to devise a plan to help those drowning under a sea of debt to come up for air and survive.
